~ Soft touch, deep relief, results that last ~
Ortho-Bionomy® is a highly effective and comprehensive system of natural healing that has its roots in Osteopathy and Martial Arts. This deep, gentle work relieves pain and restores natural alignment, function and balance with more ease, immediacy and lasting effectiveness than you might have thought possible, even when other bodywork modalities have ceased to be effective.
Why is Ortho-Bionomy so effective?
Ortho-Bionomy goes well beyond massage and other bodywork modalities because it is not done "to" anyone, rather it works "with" you and with your body's innate intelligence via the nervous system. All healing is self-healing that happens within the body. The body is self-organizing (could you tell yourself how to walk?), self-regulating (could you command your stomach to start digesting, stop digesting?) and self-healing. Scroll down for information on How Ortho-Bionomy works "with" your body.
Ortho-Bionomy alleviates pain, what else can it do?
Ortho-Bionomy relieves pain, increases flexibility, fluidity and range of motion, speeds recovery from injury and the effects of stress, heightens bodymind awareness, restores structural balance, improves the function of organs (the endocrine system) and promotes well-being. When the body is structurally balanced, as founder Arthur Pauls stated, "your body works better, you think better, you feel better." Ortho-Bionomy goes beyond bodywork and reminds us how to be more at ease in our lives and in our bodies, physically and energetically.
How can I benefit from Ortho-Bionomy?
Ortho-Bionomy Practitioners have even helped clients prevent surgery associated with joints, disc problems and spinal fusions. Practitioners frequently alleviate pain and other symptoms associated with the following conditions.
Injuries, strains, sprains
Tennis elbow, Golf elbow
Myofascial and Trigger point pain
Thoracic Outlet Syndrome
What is a session like?
Sessionstypically last an hour and take place mostly with you resting on a massage table, wearing comfortable loose-fitting clothing. Sometimes assessments or self-care exercises are done while sitting or standing. During the session, the practitioner "listens" to your body to sense where to work, to gently encourage restrictions to let go, and, in general, to faciliate an inner healing process, according to your needs and your body's response to the work.
Movements and positioning that create comfort, as well as energy flow, touch and "feel-good" traction or compression into the joints are used to activate the body's innate self-correcting reflexes. No forceful manipulations are used. Natural alignment and balance re-emerge, as accumulated stress and tension are released. Ortho-Bionomy is a gentle process of neuromuscular re-education that increases physical and personal awareness in the process of restoring balance, working on all levels of body, mind and spirit. Self-balancing relfexes are an integral part of the nervous system and your ability to move and adapt to life's changing circumstances improves. Relaxation often continues to deepen after the session ends. Since change arises from within, results are long-lasting, and exquisitely integrated in a wholistic way, as only the body can do for itself.
Ortho-Bionomy is one of the safest and most relaxing forms of bodywork, as well as an excellent complement to other forms of therapy. Other modalities may be integrated into your session, keeping the principles of self-healing at work for you.
Home exercises may be suggested to further aid in relieving pain and restoring balance and function throughout the body, empowering clients to engage their own self-healing abilities, help alleviate pain and restore mobility at home or office between sessions.
At the end of a session, in addition to reporting relief of specific symptoms, including pain, clients often talk about feeling a deep sense of relaxation, release from mental chatter, or a lighter feeling throughout the body. Many report a greater sense of freedom and flexibility in movement. Many people are surprised that what seems to be such a gentle, and passive approach can have such dramatic and profound effects on physical imbalances and long-standing symptoms. Those with chronic pain (including Fibromyalgia and Myofascial Pain) are often amazed at how easily their tension melts, muscles soften and pain dissipates.
How does Ortho-Bionomy work "with" my body?
~ Specific ways of working with comfort signal relaxation,
This unique system uses comfortable positioning, gentle contact and relaxing movements to work with your nervous system to stimulate your body's innate self-regulating and self-balancing responses. The body changes itself. In this way, an Ortho-Bionomy Practitioner can unlock tension in muscles and ligaments and restore natural alignment of the joints and the entire structure of your body. As founder Dr. Arthur Pauls stated, "when your body structure works, your circulation works better, you think better, you feel better."
Additionally, Ortho-Bionomy Practitioners learn Dr. Chapman's Neuro-lymphatic Reflexes, which help release pressure on nerves, stimulate lymphatic drainage, and restore balance and function to the endocrine system -- that means your organs work better, your stomach, your intestines work better. Cranial work helps restore function and well-being via the CranioSacral System.
Ortho-Bionomy Practitioners learn how to engage innate self-correcting, self-healing reflexes, that release tension from the inside-out, according to the body's knowledge of itself. Remember, your body arose from the merging of two cells of two people into one cell; from one cell into an incredible physical, mental, emotional, spiritual life form. Ortho-Bionomy activates that innate intelligence. All of the techniques are completely safe and promote deep relaxation and healing in a way that only the body can do from within itself, for itself.
A gentle, internal re-education takes place via the nervous system. In the process of restoring balance, it increases physical and personal awareness, is deeply relaxing and works on all levels of body, mind and spirit. The beneficial effects go deeper than most bodywork techniques. Ortho-Bionomy reminds us how to be more at ease in our bodies and in our lives, physically and energetically.
Ortho-Bionomy means "the correct application (ortho) of the natural or scientific laws (nomy) of life (bio)." The system includes techniques for body alignment, postural re-education, energy balancing, self-care and neurolymphatic reflexes for harmonizing the internal organs, restoring balance to the endocrine system.
Arthur Lincoln Pauls, D.O.(England), was a Judo Instructor for ten years before studying Osteopathy. He was searching for a way of correcting injuries and imbalances that worked with the body's natural healing ability and the natural laws of movement and structure. While training in Osteopathy he was introduced to the concept of comfortably positioning the body in a way that eases the tension and discomfort associated with structural lesions and pain. He experimented with the concept for many years. In time, he developed a complete system of techniques, or ways of working with the body, that activate the natural healing reflexes using, not only position, but movement, balance, energetic or proprioceptive balancing and more. (See Description of Workshops.) From his understanding and integration of the principles of movement and health through structural alignment, arose Ortho-Bionomy. For nearly three decades he taught Ortho-Bionomy in the US, Europe and Australia. He spent his later years in Southern France, working and teaching right up to his death in 1997.
Ortho-Bionomy is taught and recognized worldwide for its simplicity, gentleness and long-lasting benefits. It bridges and integrates physical and energetic techniques, structural and muscular work, cranial and energy field balancing.

Can I learn Ortho-Bionomy?
Yes. Study Ortho-Bionomy. No previous training is required to take a workshop or begin a training program. Many clients enroll in the Self-Care workshop to help themselves at home in between appointments. Some have taken other classes to learn how natural healing works in their bodies, and to help friends and family. Many bodyworkers take classes for continuing education and ultimately, to get better results for their clients while expending less effort, relieving pain without causing pain, enabling them to prolong a career they love.
