Arrival, what to wear and bring: For your comfort, please wear or bring, loose-fitting clothing and socks or slippers, and dress in layers to accomodate changes in room temperature and changing weather. Bring pen/pencil and paper, water and funds for lunch. If you have special dietary concerns and needs, please see to it that these needs are covered (by bringing a snack, special foods if required, etc.).
It is well-known that we learn best when we open our minds to consider new or different information and embody a spirit of playfulness and curiosity. A sense of play, with respect for the group process and consideration for each and every person will make for a harmonious learning environment and a delightful weekend.
Parking: Free parking in lot below the white buildling, in front of the A.R.E. Center at Atlantic Avenue and 67th Street.
Nearest airports: Norfolk Airport - ORF.
Public Transportation: Buses travel along Atlantic Avenue. The school is one block up the hill at 67th Street and Atlantic Avenue, next to the historic white building..
Lodging: When you enroll in a workshop, you may request a housing list offered by "Friends of the A.R.E." People active in the A.R.E. who want to support others' learning, offer inexpensive housing, ranging from a guest room to a cottage, to large homes at very low rates. Inquire with the Continuing Education Coordinator when you register for the workshop. You may need to do a little research to find the best place for you.
There may also be discounts at a local hotel available for people attending A.R.E. events.
Wyndham Hotel, on the beach at 57th street, has given discounts to people attending an A.R.E. event. Please inquire with the school to see if this discount is currently available.
Barclay Cottage Bed & Breakfast is on 16th St and has a variety of room sizes available with kitchens. This could be an inexpensive stay for a group of people sharing.
Days Inn near 12th street (there's another one) has had very inexpensive rates; prices rise when there is a local festival.
Students committed to saving money on lodging and tolerant of older places with less polish have stayed at Seaside Hotel, $100 high season; The Diplomat, The Belvedere, all are on the lower end price range. Cutty Sark has regular hotel rooms and group rooms with kitchen facilities as well. Ann has not stayed in any of these and cannot vouche for them one way or another. if you have information, let us know and we'd be happy to include it here.
